Blood donation - Edu Kapps / SMS The Ronaldo Gazolla Municipal Hospital will hold, on Monday (25/8) and Tuesday (26/8), the second edition of this year of its blood donation campaign, in partnership with Hemorio, responsible for providing blood products to more than 200 hospitals in the public network of Rio de Janeiro, especially in emergency situations.
"In large hospitals, such as Gazolla, which houses the Super Centro Carioca de Cirurgia, donations play an even more crucial role. The collected blood provides transfusion support for patients undergoing surgery, in intensive care, or in critical cases, where blood is an essential life-saving resource," said Roberto Rangel, president of RioSaúde, the company that manages the hospital.
In the first edition of the campaign, held in May, the hospital collected approximately 200 bags. The expectation now is to surpass that number. Donation is safe and quick: collection takes less than ten minutes, and within 24 hours the donor's body begins to replenish some of the removed substances. New donations can be made after eight weeks for men and 12 weeks for women, when the blood is fully replenished.
Low stock
Despite the importance of this gesture, only 14 out of every 250 Brazilians are regular donors through the Unified Health System (SUS). This rate, although within the minimum parameters recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), is still considered low. As a result, Hemorio is facing shortages in its supplies. To fully meet the needs of the Rio de Janeiro population, approximately XNUMX bags of blood would be collected daily.
To participate, you must present an official photo ID, be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have a guardian's authorization), be in good health, and weigh at least 50 kg. Fasting is not required, but it is recommended to avoid fatty foods for three hours before donating.
