- Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital inaugurates new pediatrics ward.
The new pediatric ward at Souza Aguiar Hospital has 59 beds - Marcos de Paula/Rio City Hall The Rio de Janeiro City Hall inaugurated, this Wednesday (December 24th), the new pediatrics sector of the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in the city center. The opening is the result of joint work between the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) and the first Public-Private Partnership in healthcare in the municipality, which includes the complete structural and technological renovation of the unit. The new space has 59 beds.
– Nothing is more symbolic than being able to deliver today something we've been working on for a long time. We are increasing the capacity of the pediatric ward by 40%. Unfortunately, some little ones need to stay here on Christmas Eve, but the good thing is knowing that they will be well cared for, with all the love and attention, alongside their father, mother, or guardian, receiving quality medical treatment – stated the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, who distributed gifts to some hospitalized patients, alongside the vice-mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, and wished a Merry Christmas to the people of Rio and Brazilians.
The inauguration marked a new era for the hospital's pediatrics department. The space underwent a complete structural renovation, also adapting the location to accessibility standards. In addition to new air conditioning units, beds, furniture, equipment, and surveillance cameras, everything is new and modern for the comfort of patients and staff.
The pediatrics department operates on the seventh floor of the hospital and features full integration between services, serving patients aged 0 to 17 years. In its new configuration, the space includes an intensive care unit (ICU) with 10 cubicles, one of which is an isolation room; nine wards with 36 beds and two isolation rooms; and a Yellow Room with 10 beds and one isolation room. The department also reopens with a new Children's and Youth Area, five nursing stations, a lounge for professionals and caregivers, a medical and nursing on-call area, a procedure room, a meeting room, and restrooms.
"This is the most important pediatric emergency room in the city. It has the highest volume of patients in the network and is now completely renovated. We have a new pediatric ICU with individual beds, and all the wards have been rebuilt. The pediatric surgery service, which is very important, is fully operational. With this inauguration, we are advancing pediatric emergency care in the city, with a structure among the best in the world," said the Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.
The inauguration of the pediatric ward took place during a Christmas event for children hospitalized at Souza Aguiar Hospital, with the distribution of gifts. Every year, the Municipal Health Department (SMS) promotes Christmas activities in the hospitals of its network, such as visits from Santa Claus, choir performances, and musical bands. These actions are important to bring comfort and affection to patients who are away from their families during these festive periods, and who tend to be more emotionally sensitive. They also help reduce the stress of illness and hospitalization, bringing joy and solidarity, especially to hospitalized children and the elderly.

Thamires Muller Mota, a 23-year-old self-employed worker and resident of Rio Comprido, brought her 4-year-old daughter, Lívia Guimarães Muller, to the pediatrician on December 17th. Lívia was diagnosed with purpura, an autoimmune condition where the body destroys its own platelets, causing purple spots on the skin and mucous membranes, as well as a risk of bleeding, for example, from the nose.
"The care has been wonderful, my daughter is improving, everything is going very well. This is a very good place for children to recover," declared Thamires, holding her daughter Lívia in her lap, minutes before receiving a gift from the mayor of Rio.
