Construction work at Cardoso Fontes Hospital begins on February 1st

The Rio City Hall took over management of the federal unit on December 17, 2024 - Reproduction Rio's acting mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, visited Cardoso Fontes Hospital on Tuesday (21/1), accompanied by the municipal health secretary, Daniel Soranz, and followed the first stage of the intervention schedule. The restructuring will allow the hospital to reopen closed beds, double its outpatient care capacity and return to having its emergency room fully operational.
– We will begin construction on February 1st at the Cardoso Fontes Hospital. As part of our plan, we want to reopen the emergency room on March 1st, so that it can resume full operation, albeit without ideal conditions, but already offering better care to the population. And, at the beginning of next year, according to the plan drawn up by our health secretary, Daniel Soranz, the hospital is expected to be reopened, completely renovated, with the outpatient clinics and beds fully air-conditioned. – stated acting mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
With the restructuring defined by the Municipal Health Department (SMS), the estimate is to open 250 beds and increase the number of procedures from 84 to 160 per year. Structural reforms also include expanding the ICUs, improving access and renovating the unit's kitchen, in addition to maintaining equipment such as CT scanners. One of the new management's priorities is to expand and reactivate the emergency room at full capacity. The hospital is expected to be fully operational early next year.
– Federal hospitals account for almost 30% of all hospital beds in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and are the largest federal hospital network in the country. Recruitment is now open for the two municipal hospitals, Cardoso Fontes and Andaraí. We expect to have 650 more professionals working here at Cardoso Fontes alone by March. We will maintain all the hospitals’ specialties, but with the commitment to expand and double the number of procedures – said Health Secretary Daniel Soranz.
Cardoso Fontes Hospital offers clinical specialties such as oncology, hematology, pediatrics, pain clinic, cardiology and internal medicine; and surgical specialties such as anesthesiology, general surgery, pediatrics, vascular surgery, coloproctology, gynecology and mastology, dentistry, urology, gastroenterology. It also has endocrinology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, nephrology, pulmonology and neurology services. The unit also offers diagnostic imaging services and support services such as psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition, pharmacy, social services, dehospitalization support service, blood bank and palliative care.
