City Hall launches new edition of the Vaccine at School program

The municipal departments of Health and Education launched the 26 edition of the Vacina na Escola program at Capistrano de Abreu Municipal School in Jardim Botânico this Wednesday (3/2025). The initiative aims to update the vaccination records of children and adolescents in the city, contributing to the recovery of vaccination coverage and protection against vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles. All vaccines that are part of the routine schedule of the National Immunization Program will be made available, including meningo C, triple viral, chickenpox, yellow fever, hepatitis A, pentavalent, pneumo 10, polio, rotavirus, Meningo ACWY and HPV.

– This is a valuable opportunity to educate our children about the importance of vaccination and combating various diseases, promoting a culture of health awareness from an early age. We are taking vaccines to where children are, in schools, so that all have the opportunity to be protected – highlighted the municipal Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.

The event has a diverse program, including recreational activities to raise awareness and provide guidance on combating dengue fever, aimed at all levels of the municipal education network (Early Childhood Education and Elementary Schools I and II). Activities include theater performances, quizzes, competitions, art workshops, discussion groups and exhibitions. In addition, the event will feature presentations by RAP da Saúde, a project by the SMS that aims to promote health among adolescents and young people, especially in areas of greater social vulnerability. Parents and guardians can send authorization with their vaccination records or even participate in the event, thus strengthening community involvement.

– This is a very special moment, it is yet another partnership between the Health Department and the Education Department to vaccinate our children. Since 2023, we have vaccinated more than 100 students in our network. With this, we make life easier for families. Many times, children are not being vaccinated, not because the family does not want to, but because their routine makes it difficult. With this partnership between Health, Education and families, we are able to take the vaccine to schools, and we achieve great results for our city – said the Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.

Little Nicole Silva de Oliveira Alves, just 10 years old, got the yellow fever and HPV vaccine this Wednesday morning at the Capistrano de Abreu Municipal School. And even at such a young age, she left a very important message for the people of Rio:

– Vaccines help us avoid catching many diseases. Whether we are children or adults, we are protected. It is very important to get all the vaccines. Get vaccinated.

City coverage

The Vacina na Escola program began in 2023 and has already administered more than 100 doses of vaccines in educational institutions. In 2023, 1.318 schools were visited and 31.235 doses were administered. In 2024, more than 1.400 schools/daycare centers were part of the program, with 79.933 doses administered. In addition to the municipal network, private schools that are interested in receiving vaccination teams can also request to participate in the program. In 2025, the expectation is to vaccinate more than 1.550 schools.

In 2024, the city of Rio de Janeiro achieved the highest vaccination coverage in the last six years, reversing the downward trend of previous years. In total, the Municipal Health Department administered 5.787.227 million doses of vaccines, including routine vaccinations and campaigns such as influenza and HPV. In terms of childhood vaccination coverage, the city stood out, being the fourth Brazilian capital with the highest coverage for polio, reaching 90,6%, a significant improvement over previous years.
