Rio expands updated COVID-19 vaccine to over-60s

The Municipal Health Department (SMS) began offering, this Friday (11/7), the vaccine against the JN.1 variant of covid-19 for people aged 60 and over. The vaccine is available in all 240 vaccination rooms in the municipality, including the Super Centro Carioca de Vacinação in Botafogo and in the West Zone, at ParkShoppingCampoGrande.

"We have high COVID-19 vaccination coverage. Almost 98% of Rio residents have already received at least two doses, and we have no COVID-related hospitalizations in the city. To maintain this trend, it's important to get booster shots. Everyone over 60 is encouraged to seek vaccination at a healthcare facility," said Health Secretary Daniel Soranz.

The city of Rio has already vaccinated elderly residents of Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCFs) and those over 65 in its facilities. In August, it will be the turn of those with immunosuppression (or who use immunosuppressive medications – to regulate the immune system). Other age groups will be reached in a staggered manner, according to the Ministry of Health's vaccine delivery schedule. The vaccine is safe and prevents against the most recent circulating COVID-19 variant, JN.1, reducing the risk of hospitalization and mortality from the disease.

Cook Márcia Silva Corrêa, 60, spoke about her motivation to get vaccinated.

"I'm getting vaccinated to stay healthy and to avoid becoming another COVID victim. I've had all the doses, including the current one, and I'll take all the doses that come my way."

In addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, it is also important to get vaccinated against influenza to prevent the disease and its complications. The flu campaign is currently underway for all people over six months of age.
