Sambadrome has six medical stations for the parades

The Municipal Health Department (SMS) has prepared a special emergency medical assistance plan for the samba school parades at the Sambadrome, which will take place from February 28 to March 4, in addition to the performances by the junior schools on Friday, the 7th, and by the champions on Saturday, the 8th. Six medical posts will be distributed along Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí, at strategic points, to assist those in need. In addition, professionals from the city's Health Surveillance Institute (IVISA-Rio) will take action to monitor compliance with health regulations.

The medical stations will be located in sectors 1 (concentration), 2, 7, 10 (Rua Salvador de Sá), 11 and Apoteose (dispersal) and will operate from 19:5 p.m. to 6:32 a.m. the following day for the Série Ouro parades, and until 12:200 a.m. for the three nights of the Grupo Especial and on the Saturday of the champions. The service structure will have a total of 7 beds, seven of which will be for advanced support, and 16 hydration chairs, distributed among the stations. A total of XNUMX professionals will be involved in the operation. On the day of the presentation of the junior schools (XNUMX), there will be five stations operating from XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.

For patients with more serious conditions, there will be ambulances with advanced support (mobile ICU) to make the transfer, coordinated by the Municipal Regulatory Center, to hospitals or UPAs in the network. There will be 16 ambulances with advanced support (mobile ICU) and their own teams on standby on each day of the Gold Series and Special Group schools parade and on the champions' Saturday. For the children's parade, there will be 10 vehicles available.

– Carnival is a very important event for the city’s culture and economy, which is why every year the Health Department prepares a service plan for both the revelers who go to enjoy the street parties and the public at the Sambadrome. Our medical clinics are prepared and equipped to provide immediate care for emergencies that arise. And the entire hospital network will be on standby and prepared to receive the most serious cases, which require more complex care. The Municipal Regulatory Center also coordinates any necessary transfers – says the municipal Health Secretary, Daniel Soranz.

The Municipal Health Department has years of expertise in operating medical clinics at events with large crowds, such as Carnival and New Year's Eve. The SMS medical clinics have also operated during the samba school rehearsals on the weekends leading up to the parades. In 2024, the SMS structure served 2.508 people at the Sambadrome alone, with 150 removals. Of the services provided, 2.148 were for clinical reasons and 360 for trauma.

Health surveillance before, during and after carnival

The Health Surveillance Department will be working before, during and after Carnival in Sapucaí, monitoring, detecting, investigating, preventing and controlling potential public health events that may occur, aiming to protect the health of people in the area, as well as the entire population of Rio. In preparation for the parades, environmental surveillance and vector control actions have already been carried out at the site, with the application of ultra-low-volume insecticide (fogging), inspection of the sites and elimination of potential breeding sites for disease-transmitting mosquitoes.

The team at the Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance (CIEVS-Rio) has been monitoring the epidemiological scenario at local, national and international levels to track possible changes in disease occurrence patterns and/or outbreaks. CIEVS will also be active during and after the event, monitoring care at medical clinics to detect notifiable diseases and conditions, as well as outbreaks and other events of public health relevance, with rapid response, prevention and control actions, in addition to monitoring the city's epidemiological scenario for 45 days after Carnival.

IVISA-Rio inspections

The Municipal Institute of Health Surveillance, Zoonosis Surveillance and Agricultural Inspection (IVISA-Rio) will monitor compliance with health standards in the facilities and in the provision of food and services at the Sambadrome and surrounding areas. The institute previously provided training for suppliers of food, beverages and health and beauty services who will work at the Rio Carnival, as well as street vendors in the area surrounding the Sambadrome, with an emphasis on hygiene, correct storage temperature and food labeling.
