Health promotes actions to mark Anti-Asylum Struggle Day

The Dona Ivone Lara Forest, in the area of the former Nise da Silveira Institute - Disclosure May is the month dedicated to the fight against asylums. With the aim of encouraging discussion on the subject, units of the Rio de Janeiro municipal health network will promote a series of cultural activities throughout the second half of the month. The Rio de Janeiro Municipal Health Department (SMS) has made significant progress in the process of deinstitutionalizing psychiatric patients in recent years, with the implementation of the Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) and Therapeutic Residential Services (SRTs) care network as a new care model, and with the end of hospitalizations in the city's two last large asylums – a process that follows the precepts of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform.
Kicking off the program and to mark National Anti-Asylum Day, celebrated this Thursday (18/05), the mental health network organized an event in Cinelândia for the humanization of treatment. The gathering in the North Zone will be at the Nise da Silveira Institute, from where participants will depart for the activity at the Center. With the end of hospitalizations in October 2021, the Nise da Silveira Institute has consolidated itself as a reference in the promotion of mental health through art, culture, sports, leisure and income-generating workshops.
– This is a date that marks the fight for citizenship and the possibility of life outside the asylum for people who have been deprived of their freedom for many years. These people have a place in society, and we need to care for these patients with freedom, dignity and in their diversity. This fight is for the whole of society, for users, family members and even professionals – says the superintendent of Mental Health at the SMS, Hugo Fagundes.
Over the past 28 years, the city of Rio de Janeiro has released more than four thousand people from mental institutions, who have had their citizenship reinstated and are now living with their families or in one of the 97 therapeutic residences maintained by the city government. Their treatments continue in the city's 33 psychosocial care centers (CAPS), which replace bars with humanized therapies based on respect and empathy.
The May program will conclude with the fourth edition of the Deinstitutionalization Symposium of the Juliano Moreira Municipal Health Care Institute, in Curicica. The event will take place between the 29th and 30th, from 9 am to 17 pm, with the theme, “Bodies, subjectivities, institutions and vulnerabilities: the other names of the asylum”. The goal of the symposium is to promote reflections and discuss advances in confronting the asylum and its facets.
The former Juliano Moreira Colony has a history linked to psychiatry, with roots in oppression, but which exudes resistance. The unit ended its internment in October 2022. Many of the properties in the former complex were transformed into municipal health units, including CAPS, and social assistance units. The Bispo do Rosário Museum, which pays homage to one of its most famous inmates, still operates at the headquarters of the Juliano Moreira Institute.
