Vaccination in Rio - Edu Kapps / SMS

The Municipal Health Department (SMS) began, this Wednesday (7/5), the vaccination against covid-19 updated to the JN.1 strain, aimed at elderly people who live in long-term care facilities (ILPI). Casa São Luiz, in Caju, was one of the first institutions to receive a team to vaccinate residents. Over the next few weeks and according to the arrival of more doses, the vaccine will also be opened to other groups.

The vaccine is safe and prevents against the most recent variant, JN.1, reducing the risk of hospitalization and mortality from the disease. The previous dose must have been taken at least one year ago.

– The COVID vaccine is now part of the calendar and must be administered every year. This year, we will immunize with the JN.1 vaccine, which is updated and protects against the JN.1 strain, and we will start by vaccinating elderly people in long-term care facilities. And, starting next month, we will start immunizing people aged 80 or over, and it is very important that everyone takes the new dose and protects themselves against the variant – explained the municipal health secretary, Daniel Soranz.

José Roberto Alves Ferreira, 75 years old, has lived at Casa São Luiz for just over a year and was one of the first to receive the dose.

– Just bring your vaccines and I’ll get them all. At our age, it’s important to protect yourself and keep your vaccinations up to date.

Another person who made a point of staying up to date with her vaccinations was Mrs. Marcelina Teixeira, 75 years old.

– Health is the most important thing we can have, so we need to take care of it, right? I got my vaccine and now I’m well protected.

In the coming weeks, and as more doses arrive, the expectation is to vaccinate other priority groups in the 240 vaccination rooms in Primary Care units (family clinics and municipal health centers) in the municipality and in the two units of the Super Centro Carioca vaccination center, in Botafogo, and at ParkShoppingCampoGrande.

In addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, it is also important for people to take the other seasonal vaccines: against influenza, yellow fever and measles. The flu campaign is underway, due to the seasonality of the disease, and will have its D-day next Saturday (10/5).
