City Hall launches the Album of the City of Rio de Janeiro: Bicentenary of Independence – 2022

Mayor Eduardo Paes and Secretary of Government and Public Integrity Tony Chalita participated in the launch of the Rio de Janeiro City Album: Bicentennial of Independence – 2022, this Thursday (10/11), at the City Palace, in Botafogo. The work, published by the General Archive of the City, presents the visual history of Rio and shows the elements preserved from independence to the present day. Divided into three sections, the photobook has 176 pages and is published in a bilingual edition (Portuguese and English).

 

– Rio celebrated the Bicentennial of Independence with documentaries, books, and other activities. Rio is a fantastic city, a world reference. Long live our independence, Brazil, and this incredible city – said Eduardo Paes.

 

The first section of the book recovers images of iconography from the early 50th century. In this part, most of the photos are watercolors by Debret. The second part of the book contains XNUMX historical photographs from the second half of the XNUMXth century and the XNUMXth century. The third section of the album contemplates contemporary Rio and presents exclusive images by photographer Claudio Edinger.

 

– What is interesting about this book is that it does not show the evolution of the history of Rio de Janeiro, but the social evolution of Brazil itself. The release of the album crowns all the celebrations that we imagined in the city of Rio during these 200 years of Brazil’s independence. This book is an opportunity for us to bring to the people of Rio the records of the city, something of immeasurable richness. The album will be available at the General City Archives, at municipal schools and, probably, we will have a digital version – said Tony Chalita.

 

The album is a joint edition of the City of Rio, the General Archive of the City, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the Rio Art Museum and Aprazível Edições e Arte.

 

– This project began a year ago. The album shows Rio as the protagonist of independence. For almost 200 years, Rio was the capital of Brazil, of the colony, of the empire and of the republic. The Royal Family moved here and lived in several places. The places in Rio are iconic and the album turned out wonderful – declared the president of the General Archive, Rosa Maria Araújo.

 

Documentary “Words of Independence”

In September, also in celebration of the Bicentennial of Independence, the City of Rio released the documentary “Words of Independence”, featuring previously unpublished manuscripts about Brazil’s independence. The film portrays how the City’s General Archive recovered rare items that show Rio as the capital of Independence.

In the original documents of the city's public administration, unpublished manuscripts from the 1822th century were found that record the process of Brazil's transformation into an independent nation in XNUMX. The work shows how the documents were recovered by the technical team and proposes a debate on Rio's role in Independence.

Directed by Liloye Boubli, the documentary delves into the living memory of the collection and brings accounts from collaborators of the Archive who participated in the process of reconnecting with the History of Brazil.
