Committed to public policies, food systems and climate justice, the city of Rio will host the 17th Global Forum of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact starting this Monday (10/8). Sponsored by the City Hall, the event will bring together more than 19 delegates, mayors and representatives from 10 cities around the world, such as Paris, Copenhagen, Chicago and Washington, D.C., until Wednesday (500/162). The capital's experience with programs such as Horta Carioca, Prato Feito Carioca and Hortas Escolares will be presented to the public.

For the first time in South America, the event held in the City of Arts presents the theme “Food to Nourish Climate Justice: Urban Food Solutions for a Fairer World”. The forum, which is an international agreement of mayors, will announce the winners of the 2022 Milan Pact Awards and the efforts made by cities to achieve the pact’s recommendations.

In Rio, the global Prato Feito Carioca program, from the Municipal Department of Social Assistance, is the public policy that combats hunger on two fronts: through the meal card for informal workers who earn up to R$210, and the Carioca Community Kitchens, which served 300 thousand meals in three months.

Rio also maintains Hortas Cariocas, through the Secretariat of Environment and Climate, which has already produced more than 50 tons of food this year, and Hortas Escolares, from the Secretariat of Education, an initiative that encourages healthy eating, promotes better use of school meals and stimulates the exchange of information in the area of food security.
