Municipal Civil Defense activates sirens in 32 communities

The 199 service has registered 26 emergency calls so far

The Subsecretariat of Civil Protection and Defense, linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop), activated, at 21:05 pm this Friday (day 1), sirens in 32 of the 103 communities of high geological risk monitored by the city's sound alert system.

Communities – In all, 57 sirens were activated in the following locations: Vidigal and Rocinha in the South Zone; Andaraí, Vila Isabel Park, Mangueira, Candelária Park, Arrelia, Matriz, Macacos and Catumbi, in the Greater Tijuca region; Pai São João Site, Baron, Commander Luiz Souto, Rio das Pedras and Quiririm, in the West Zone; Morro do Céu, Pretos Forros, Cachoeira Grande, Cachoeirinha, Cotia, Encontro, Our Lady of Guia, Nova Divinéia, Santa Terezinha, São João, Sapê, Barro Vermelho, Dona Francisca, Ouro Preto, Vila Cabuçu, Barro Preto and Jamelão, all in the North Zone.

To date, the 199 service (the agency's call center) has received 26 emergency calls – most of which were related to structural damage to buildings and landslides. So far, no casualties have been reported. The agency's engineers and technicians are already responding to the main calls.

The sirens are activated by the municipal Civil Defense after monitoring and evaluating critical rainfall levels by meteorologists from the Rio Alert System, based at the Rio Operations Center (COR), where DCRJ professionals work in an integrated manner 24 hours a day. The system also relies on the participation of community leaders and volunteers, in addition to previously defined support points in case there is a need to temporarily evacuate residents. The Rio City Hall's Community Alert and Alarm System for Heavy Rains has 83 Civil Defense rain gauges, 165 sirens and 194 support points in 103 communities at high risk of landslides, as defined by Geo-Rio.

Carnival – During the festivities, Civil Defense prepared a special plan to act on standby, 24 hours a day, with 180 agents divided into shifts and teams distributed across the agency's headquarters, in Vila Isabel, and the Rio Operations Center, in Cidade Nova, to monitor and act in cases of need or urgency.

SMS - The agency sends heavy rain alerts via SMS. Signing up for the service is voluntary. Registration is simple, quick and free: citizens must send their home zip code to 40199.
