Rio Carnaval Exhibition, in MAR, will immortalize Rio’s festivities as a work of art

The Rio Carnaval exhibition will open to the public this Wednesday (21/02) at the Rio Art Museum (MAR) in downtown Rio. The free exhibition will occupy the ground floor and fifth floors of the space. The rooms will have a projection booth, eighty screens measuring 1,50m x 2m and 80cm x 1m and three other gigantic screens measuring 5m x 5m. The material was selected from over 800 photos and many hours of video footage.

The exhibition is part of the program focused on the G20 Summit, which will bring together representatives of the world's largest economies in the city in November. Rio will also host a meeting of the group's foreign ministers tomorrow.

The bilingual project Livro Arte was the starting point for this, the city's first major exhibition about Carnival. Photographers Fábio Ghivelder, João Farkas, Igor Souto and Leonardo Ramadinha, as well as visual artist Vik Muniz, participated in the initiative. The selected images were taken at the 2022 Special Group samba school parade, at Marquês de Sapucaí, the first to be held in person post-COVID-19, on an alternative date in April.

The exhibition, curated by set designer, architect and artist Gringo Cardia and historian and writer Luiz Antônio Simas, pays homage to professionals who do not normally appear in the media, such as blacksmiths, embroiderers, lighting technicians, prop designers and seamstresses.

The exhibition will be on display until May 19th.

– Presenting the marvelous city through the eyes of great photographers was the inspiration. Choosing to start with the world’s largest popular culture event, Carnival, was due to the size and scope of this art form that will allow us to travel the world presenting Rio and attracting more tourists – explains the municipal secretary of Tourism, Daniela Maia.
