Rio City Hall awards diploma to students from the first class of the Carioca Tourism School

The first class of graduates from the Rio de Janeiro School of Tourism graduated in a ceremony held on Wednesday (13/12) at the Teatro de Câmara da Cidade das Artes in Barra da Tijuca. The school is a partnership between the Rio de Janeiro City Department of Tourism and Senac RJ. In total, 198 students participated in the Rio de Janeiro City Hall project, which aims to provide free professional training in various courses and help improve the performance of tourist services visiting Rio de Janeiro.

Rio's Secretary of Tourism, Daniela Maia, and the regional director of Senac RJ, Sérgio Ribeiro, presented the diplomas to the graduates and, during the ceremony, highlighted the importance of the city having an increasing number of qualified workers for the sector.

– In a city like Rio de Janeiro, which is a tourist destination by nature, training these people ensures that we will have more and more tourists returning to our city – said Daniela Maia.

 

75% of graduates are women with an average age of 36 years

The students received training in the following areas: foreign languages ​​(such as English and Spanish), event organization techniques, etiquette, ceremonial and protocol, local tourist information, cultural tourism, hotel reception and sign language. The courses were held at several Senac units, in neighborhoods such as Copacabana, Botafogo and Riachuelo. Among the graduates, the majority were women (75%) with a mean age of 36, and the highest demand rate was at the units in Madureira, Barra da Tijuca and Campo Grande.

– This city breathes tourism. Enough of this story that the city is wonderful but the service is bad. We need to qualify people, welcome our tourists well, so they always come back. We are all very focused, we need to turn this around and show that Rio is beautiful, wonderful and welcomes its tourists very well – said Sérgio Ribeiro.

 

In-person classes in several neighborhoods in the South, North and West zones

Created in July 2022, the Escola Carioca de Turismo offers courses that last an average of 2 months. The in-person classes take place at six Senac units: Barra da Tijuca, Botafogo, Campo Grande, Copacabana, Madureira and Riachuelo. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and have completed high school.

A tour guide for three years, Patrícia Gomes took the cultural guide and Libras courses and already has plans to enroll in the events class in 2024:

– I always wanted to take some courses, but the pandemic got in the way a bit, so the City Hall gave me this opportunity. I thought about adding more knowledge to my resume, the Senac diploma has a great value in our network. With the classes I was also able to meet new people and make partnerships – celebrates Patrícia.
