Rio de Janeiro is among the five cities that had the highest growth in tourism GDP in the world. A study conducted by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that tourism in Rio de Janeiro increased by 9% in 2022, compared to 2019. With this growth, Rio de Janeiro ranks fifth in the world and first in South America, behind Doha (Qatar), Warsaw (Poland), Sanya (China) and Orlando (USA). Rio's redemption is the result of several actions by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall to stimulate the city as a major global destination.

The increase in tourist activity in the city has a direct and indirect impact on the economy, especially with the movement in the trade and services sector. Proof of the progress is that, in the study, Rio de Janeiro came out ahead of cities such as Las Vegas, Miami (USA), Johannesburg (South Africa) and Lisbon (Portugal).

– We are constantly working in collaboration with several public and private institutions to increasingly boost tourism in Rio. The return has been gratifying, investments are returning and the city is becoming one of the best in the world. This year, with the data from January to September, we have already seen an increase of half a million new tourists, compared to 2021, for example. In addition, we also expect a summer similar to the one before the pandemic – said the Secretary of Tourism, Antônio Mariano.

Government actions to obtain this type of result are focused on improvements in tourist infrastructure, such as accessibility, heritage conservation, recovery of degraded areas and partnerships with other public bodies for the safety and care of tourists.

Highlights of the Department of Tourism include the Escola Carioca de Turismo, in partnership with Senac; LabTUR, an incubator of innovative ideas for tourism in Rio; and the “Dias de Glória” program, which aims to remodel the Glória neighborhood, in partnership with the Department of Conservation. These are examples of investments that, directly or indirectly, improve the tourist experience in our city.
