City Hall opens two more community kitchens. There are already 19 units of the Prato Feito Carioca program in the city

The Terreirão kitchen is located at Avenida Jarbas de Carvalho, 1.580, in Recreio - Beth Santos/City Hall of Rio The Prato Feito Carioca program arrived this Wednesday (20/12) on the tables of residents of Terreirão, in Recreio, and Cosmos. With the inauguration of two new Carioca Community Kitchens in the West Zone, the City of Rio now has 19 units of the project installed in different communities and neighborhoods.
– We have already served more than 2,7 million meals through the Prato Feito Carioca program and have reached the milestone of 19 kitchens spread throughout the city. This is Rio’s city government guaranteeing quality and dignified food to Rio’s citizens in the most vulnerable areas. And we are also creating jobs and income by bringing our employability programs to the kitchens – said the municipal secretary of Labor and Income, Everton Gomes, during the inauguration of the kitchen at Terreirão.
The two new units of the Prato Feito Carioca program each serve at least 280 meals per day – all balanced and supervised by the team of nutritionists from the Municipal Department of Labor and Income (SMTE). And, like the other kitchens, they will benefit poor families in situations of economic vulnerability in the city.
The first kitchen opened this Wednesday was Terreirão. Managed by SMTE, in partnership with Instituto Vida and co-managed by Instituto Realizando o Futuro, it operates at Avenida Jarbas de Carvalho, 1.580, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes.
– We know that there is a need to provide food and shelter. The partnership with these spaces where the kitchens are installed provides this service that is so important to the residents of the region – highlighted the deputy mayor of Barra, Recreio and Vargens, Raphael Lima.
A retired factory worker and now a can collector, Zeli Sousa da Silva, 76 years old, was the first beneficiary of the Terreirão kitchen to receive a meal from the hands of Secretary Everton Gomes.
– Everything is very expensive. I don’t have enough money to buy rice and beans and still maintain the house. My 17-year-old grandson, who lives with me, is finishing high school and wants to go to law school – explained Zeli.
Located in a building that had been closed for eight years, the Cosmos community kitchen, like other units of the Prato Feito Carioca program, will have the Trabalha Rio program, which registers workers for job openings in partner companies, and Rio+Cursos, which trains workers, at Estrada do Campinho, 4.700. The kitchen is a partnership between SMTE and Via Solidária, and is co-managed by Desenvolvimento de Assistência Múltipla (Desam).
With the arrival of Prato Feito and Trabalha Rio in Cosmos, Eliane Moura dos Santos Alves Gama, 62, hopes to improve her family's life.
– My daughter Elaine, 33, is looking for a job. Today, she and my three grandchildren live with me. I hope that she can also find a job here – said the resident of Santa Margarida, in Cosmos, who this Wednesday provided food for five people in her home.
In addition to the new units in Terreirão and Cosmos, Rio has community kitchens in Maré, Realengo, Mangueira, Andaraí, Catumbi, Bento Ribeiro, Tanque, Costa Barros, Anchieta, Acari, Beira Rio, Vila Kennedy, Guaratiba, Campo Grande, Vila Aliança, Nova Sepetiba and Governor's Island.
On the 25th, special lunch and distribution of toys
The Prato Feito Carioca program will serve Christmas lunch on the 25th in its 19 community kitchens. Toys will also be distributed to the children who benefit from the project, as part of the Prato Feito de Amor campaign.
