- The city's BRT fleet will be renewed: new buses will begin arriving in the second half of the year
With the bidding, the new fleet acquired for the BRT system now totals 291 buses - Archive/ Rio City Hall The city's BRT fleet will be renewed with the acquisition of 557 new vehicles. The purchase, through a bidding process, is part of a project that involves the requalification of this type of transport. The measure, under the management of the Municipal Department of Transport (SMTR), allows for the gradual replacement of old buses starting in the second half of this year and the expansion of the system until 2023. The objective is to ensure greater quality in the service provided.
The acquisition of the new BRTs will be divided into two bids. The first foresees the purchase of 307 articulated vehicles, with delivery in October. The second is to receive another 250 buses in the second half of 2023 (basic and 21-meter models).
The new vehicles will have more robust and resistant doors and a driver's cabin to ensure employee safety. In addition, there will be an additional space for wheelchair users on the articulated buses. All buses will have onboard equipment and systems such as telemetry, GPS and video monitoring.
SMTR will also bid for the concession to operate the BRT, with proposals expected to be submitted in May. The winner will be responsible for the circulation of buses in the corridors and will also be responsible for vehicle maintenance and management of the garages.
