  • City Hall announces that Jaé has reached more than 3 million registrations and 1 million daily boardings
Cash will no longer be accepted on public transport starting May 30th, and Jaé validators will switch to PIX, debit, and credit card payments directly at the turnstiles - Conrado Portella/Rio City Hall

Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and Municipal Transportation Secretary Maína Celidonio released the Jaé card operation report this Friday (July 18th) at the Operations and Resilience Center (COR). There are already more than 7 million registrations for the new digital ticketing system, which currently accounts for approximately 3% of daily municipal transportation trips, equivalent to approximately 37 million boardings per day. More than 1 million cards have been distributed, and in the last 1,1 days, the total recharge amount reached R$30 million, with growth expected in the coming weeks.

Starting August 2nd, the Jaé card will be mandatory for boarding municipal buses, BRT, VLT, and licensed vans. Therefore, companies that offer transportation vouchers should migrate to the new system as soon as possible, ensuring their employees' continued access to municipal public transportation.

"We're entering a crucial week, in which transit voucher users will be our priority. Starting on the 20th, we expect increased use of Jaé by transit voucher users, with companies recharging their vouchers in Jaé. To ensure workers can travel normally using their transit vouchers in Jaé, we're counting on the collaboration of those responsible for recharging them. If recharging isn't done in Jaé, workers won't be able to use the integrated system starting August 2nd," explained Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

To ensure a smooth transition, the City Hall has been strengthening its in-person service network. All 19 stations are open Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 19 p.m. Six of them have been restructured as Super Stations, with greater service capacity: the Municipal Employee Club (Cidade Nova), the Knowledge Ship (Engenho de Dentro), the Miécimo da Silva Sports Center (Campo Grande), the Deodoro Olympic Village, the Gávea Planetarium, and the Portuguese Recreational Club in Taquara.

The City Hall advises users to prioritize online service whenever possible. After registering on the app, passengers can immediately use Jaé using the QR Code generated on the platform. People aged 65 and over are exempt from the R$7,95 fee for home delivery of the card if they choose this option.

"The number of top-ups for transportation vouchers is still low. Our goal is to reach R$180 million in total top-ups. So, here's a message to companies and ticketing agencies to top up and start using the Jaé system. Companies should deposit the same balance they deposited in Riocard now in Jaé. Users will have the same integrations; nothing will change for them," said Secretary Maína Celidonio.

How to Acquire Jaé

Hiring of Jaé by companies

Employees using transportation vouchers must purchase the Jaé card directly from their employers. The process is entirely online, through the platform jae.com.br/empresas. Here, HR or the company manager can register employees and manage the benefit.

General public

You can download the app from your mobile phone's online store, follow the registration instructions and start using Jaé virtually on your mobile phone. When you register, you can request a physical Visa card for free and pick it up at one of the service stores. Another option is to pay a fee of R$7,95 and have the card delivered to your home.

You can also purchase the card at the Self-Service Machines located at BRT stations and terminals, and get a separate card, which is a green card. This card cannot be associated with your account in the app.

Intercity Single Ticket

For the Intermunicipal Single Ticket (BUI), the Riocard will continue to be used on municipal transportation systems, using their own validators, exclusively by those eligible for the benefit. For non-integrated journeys that require separate payment, two cards will be required: the Riocard for state transportation systems and the Jaé for the municipal system. The Intermunicipal Single Ticket represents 2% of the total number of users using municipal transportation systems.

Single Carioca Ticket

Another important change concerns the fare integration of the Bilhete Único Carioca. Starting August 2, the R$4,70 fare will only be valid within the Jaé app. The benefit includes up to three integrations within three hours when using the BRT, and up to two integrations in other modes — municipal buses, VLT and legalized vans — on other trips.

The rules of the Intermunicipal Single Ticket remain unchanged. Users with an income of up to R$3.205,20, already registered in the system, will continue to use the Riocard card for their travel. Riocard validators will continue to work for this public.

About the new system

In addition to the physical card, passengers can pay for their fares using their cell phones, using a QR Code. Users can download the Jaé app or visit the website to create an account. Through the app, available for both iOS and Android phones, they can view their balance, statement, and top up their card, as well as request, block, cancel, and request a duplicate.

Credits can be purchased in the app using credit, Pix or bank slip and are available for use instantly. It is important to note that in this new system the balance does not expire.

Passengers can purchase the physical Jaé card at self-service machines, which accept notes, Pix, debit and credit cards, or request it through the app.
