Rio City Hall delivers new buses for the RIO System and inaugurates a new public garage in Campo Grande.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivered 54 buses this Saturday (August 29th) to integrate the RIO System in Campo Grande and inaugurated the first public garage of the new network in the same neighborhood. This initiative marks another step in the implementation of the new municipal public transport model in the West Zone. The vehicles will begin operating this Sunday (August 30th), reinforcing and renewing service to Campo Grande and surrounding neighborhoods.

"The handover of this public garage for the maintenance and operation of the new buses in the West Zone is very symbolic. In the first week of the new buses delivered in Santa Cruz, last Sunday, the number of passengers more than doubled. Today we are delivering 54 buses in Campo Grande. The fleet renewal in the West Zone will be total. We are going to bring about the same revolution as the BRT in the buses of this city," declared Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The delivery in Campo Grande comes after the arrival, last Sunday (August 23), of the first 115 vehicles of the RIO System in Santa Cruz. Together, the two regions received 169 new buses in August, marking the start of operations under the new municipal transport concession model.

The vehicles in Campo Grande have a predominantly orange visual identity, one of the hallmarks of the RIO System. The new fleet that arrived in the West Zone includes midi and minibus models, equipped with features focused on accessibility, comfort, safety, and operational efficiency.

The vehicles are equipped with air conditioning, USB ports, electronic dashboards, and safety systems. They also feature GPS, telemetry, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), allowing the City Hall to monitor operations in real time and track trips and service quality indicators.

"With today's delivery, we have completed the initial fleet for the first phase of the bidding process. By December, there will be another 147 buses, totaling 316. And we have already started the second phase, which foresees the contracting of another thousand buses to transform transportation in the West Zone, where the service was of the worst quality," highlighted the Secretary of Transportation, Jorge Arraes.

Routes with altered itineraries

808 | Sacred Heart – Campo Grande
The line will now run the route Sagrado Coração (Paciência) x Campo Grande, via West Shopping, Estrada do Tingui and Avenida Brasil.

841 | Vilar Carioca – Campo Grande
The line will be extended by one kilometer in Vilar Carioca, up to CIEP 432 Alberto Cavalcanti, expanding service in the area.

833 | Manguariba Complex – Campo Grande
The line will continue to run the Conjunto Manguariba x Campo Grande route, now also serving the Conjunto Campinho area via Rua Frei Timóteo.

The first public garage of the RIO System is inaugurated.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall inaugurated, this Saturday, the first public garage of the RIO System, located at Estrada do Campinho, nº 8.500, in Campo Grande. With an area of ​​56 square meters, the structure serves the lots of the first bidding process for the new system, with the capacity to receive a fleet of up to 380 urban vehicles with Euro VI technology. As stipulated in the concession contract, the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of the garage lies with the operator.

The garage features specific areas for automatic car washes, refueling, and vehicle maintenance, as well as support spaces for administrative teams and drivers. The parking lot has lighting to ensure operation even at night, while fleet and employee access is controlled by a guardhouse, reinforcing operational security.

Bidding process defines new fleet for the West Zone.

Held last Friday (August 28th) at the headquarters of the Municipal Attorney General's Office (PGM) in the city center, the bidding process for the second phase of the RIO System defined the winning companies for three lots of the new municipal bus transport concession model. With this new phase, the fleet serving Guaratiba, Santa Cruz, Campo Grande, and Bangu will increase from 654 to 1.006 vehicles, a 54% increase.

Transformation begins in the West Zone.

The implementation of the RIO System began in the West Zone, a region that historically has presented significant challenges in the operation of municipal buses. The new model foresees a gradual renewal of the fleet, expansion of service, permanent monitoring, and incorporation of technologies already used in the BRT system.

The concession contracts for the Santa Cruz and Campo Grande regions were signed in March of this year. Throughout the implementation, the fleet serving the two areas will increase from the current 104 to 316 buses, with the incorporation of the new vehicles expected by the end of the year.

The implementation of the RIO System is already producing concrete results. Even before the new concession began operating, the City Hall had already incorporated more than 350 brand-new buses into the municipal fleet, all equipped with air conditioning and the new system's visual identity. The initiative aimed to expand the availability of transportation, improve operational regularity, and offer greater comfort, safety, and reliability to passengers.

The process began in December 2025, when the first 100 buses entered circulation in 20 neighborhoods in the West Zone. In April of this year, another 112 vehicles began operating in neighborhoods such as Barra da Tijuca, Ilha do Governador, Jacarepaguá, Paciência, Bangu, and Realengo. On May 24th, another 100 buses reinforced the operation of lines in the West Zone. On June 7th, another 40 vehicles began circulating in Vila Isabel and surrounding neighborhoods, allowing the gradual resumption of important lines and consolidating the expansion of fleet renewal to different regions of the city.

More technology, comfort, and accessibility.

The new fleet was designed to offer greater comfort, safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency. The vehicles feature internal temperature control technology, a sound system with speakers and a microphone for communication with passengers, electronic panels with trip information, automatic audible announcements of upcoming stops, and an emergency button for panic or harassment situations.

The basic buses feature a low floor, rear engine, three doors, and accessibility ramp, ensuring faster boarding and inclusion for people with disabilities and reduced mobility. The entire fleet meets accessibility standards and uses Euro VI technology engines, which significantly reduces pollutant emissions.

Enhanced security

The new vehicles also incorporate technologies focused on the safety of passengers and drivers. Among the features are monitoring cameras, an internal panel for viewing images, automatic acceleration locking when doors are open, an internal speedometer, and intelligent driver assistance systems.

The fleet also features ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), which help prevent accidents, and DMS (Driver Monitoring System), responsible for identifying signs of driver fatigue or distraction.

Real-time monitoring

Intelligent Transportation Systems allow vehicles to be tracked in real time by the City Hall. The technology combines GPS and telemetry information and enables monitoring of operations, trips, and quality indicators foreseen in the new concession model.

The implementation of the RIO System establishes a new relationship between the City Hall and the operating companies, with greater capacity for oversight and monitoring of the service.

The bidding process for the second phase of the RIO System will expand the bus fleet in the West Zone by 54%.
