The city government has laid the foundation stone for the Missões Terminal, which will expand the Metropolitan BRT network to three more cities.

With an investment of R$ 46 million, the equipment will benefit 1,4 million residents of the Baixada Fluminense region, integrating with BRT services - Press Release/Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat

The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the municipal secretary of Transportation, Jorge Arraes, laid the foundation stone for the Missões Terminal, part of the Metropolitan BRT system, this Sunday (June 28th). This new facility will expand the integration between the Baixada Fluminense region and the BRT system to three more cities. During the ceremony, a commitment agreement authorizing the funding for the project was also signed. With an estimated investment of R$ 46 million, the terminal will be built in a strategic area between the Washington Luís Highway (BR-040) and Avenida Brasil.

The equipment will serve residents of Duque de Caxias, Guapimirim, and Magé. São João de Meriti and Belford Roxo, already served by the Margaridas Terminal, will also have their services expanded. In total, the expansion of the system will benefit approximately 1,4 million passengers per month who use public transportation in these regions.

"The residents of Nova Iguaçu, Mesquita, São João de Meriti, Queimados, and Nilópolis are already connecting to the Margaridas Terminal, paying less and taking less time to get to work. Now we are taking a new step with the Missões Terminal, which will connect Magé, Guapimirim, and Duque de Caxias with Rio de Janeiro, with a complete, safe, and efficient terminal that will allow passengers to arrive at work and return home with peace of mind," said Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The Missões Terminal will be a new gateway for passengers from the Baixada Fluminense region heading towards Rio de Janeiro. The terminal will offer a faster, more comfortable, and organized connection to different areas of the city. The facility will be integrated with the Gentileza Terminal via the Transbrasil corridor, operating both local and express BRT services, ensuring greater predictability, speed, and comfort for journeys.

"It is a joy for the city of Magé to be part of this historic project for the entire Baixada Fluminense region. Public transportation is a problem for all municipalities, especially in the Baixada Fluminense. Being able to provide quality of life for our citizens is a historic move," said Jamille Cozzolino, mayor of Magé.

"We are united because we know we need to change the lives of those who need it most," said the mayor of Duque de Caxias, Netinho Reis.

The Missões Terminal will be built by the Municipal Infrastructure Department in an area of ​​approximately 84 square meters. The estimated completion time for the works is one year from the signing of the contract.

Among the main interventions are the construction of the BRT platform, with 2,7 square meters, and two platforms for feeder buses, totaling 2,3 square meters. The structures will have roofing, accessibility, and direct connection between the different areas of the terminal.

The complex will also include a BRT access and ticket office building, spanning 478 square meters, responsible for organizing passenger entry and internal circulation, as well as public restrooms.

Two access control and security guard posts will also be built, as well as two support buildings for drivers, with a break room, restrooms, and an administrative area.

The project also includes ten commercial kiosks, street furniture, bicycle parking, parking for service vehicles, and areas designated for operational fleet storage. The terminal will have the capacity to simultaneously receive ten BRT buses and 22 feeder buses in specific support areas for operations.

New overpass will allow direct access to the dedicated lane on Avenida Brasil.

Even before the completion of the Missões Terminal works, residents of Baixada will benefit from the use of the viaduct built over the Missões Interchange. Intercity buses arriving at Avenida Brasil from Washington Luís will access the BRT's dedicated lane via the viaduct, reducing travel time. The structure is already completed and should be open for operation next Thursday (July 2nd).

It is expected that around 300 buses will use the new access daily, with approximately 160 intercity buses and another 140 long-distance buses heading to the Novo Rio Bus Terminal. The intervention should improve traffic flow and expand transportation integration in the region.

"The opening of this viaduct will improve the flow of buses arriving via Washington Luís, allowing direct access to the dedicated bus lane on Avenida Brasil. This will make the operation of public transportation arriving in Rio faster and more efficient," said the Secretary of Transportation, Jorge Arraes.

Terminal Margaridas was the first to connect the Baixada Fluminense region to Rio de Janeiro.

This will be the second terminal of the Metropolitan BRT. The first was the Margaridas Terminal, inaugurated on March 14th and located at the intersection of Avenida Brasil and Rodovia Presidente Dutra. The Margaridas Terminal initiated the integration between the Baixada Fluminense region and the Rio de Janeiro BRT system with the operation of intercity bus lines, creating a new alternative route to the city center via the Gentileza Terminal. The terminal also receives municipal bus lines to serve the surrounding neighborhoods. Currently, the Margaridas Terminal integrates six cities with the Rio de Janeiro municipal transportation system: Mesquita, São João de Meriti, Nova Iguaçu, Nilópolis, Belford Roxo, and Queimados.

At the terminal, passengers have access to the Transbrasil corridor and connections to different regions of the city. Integration with the BRT system also allows access to the Transoeste, Transolímpica, and Transcarioca corridors, expanding travel options within the municipality of Rio.
