The City of Rio, through the Municipal Department of Transportation, conducted a survey with taxi drivers to find out their opinion on possible changes to the Disciplinary Code for the mode of transportation, which has not been updated since 2013. The survey is part of the methodology defined by the working group, coordinated by the Department of Transportation, created with the objective of reviewing the regulation, dialoguing broadly with the category.

The survey, which will technically support the reformulation of the Code, was carried out during the month of September and, this Wednesday (09), the Undersecretary of Transport, Allan Borges, personally visited some taxi ranks in the Center, Botafogo and Tijuca, to talk to the category, who also answered a questionnaire formulated by the SMTR about some changes studied by the department, such as the presentation of mandatory documentation in digital version during inspection actions; the inclusion of the “warning” penalty, of an educational nature; and the review of the amounts of fines provided for.

The working group also held face-to-face meetings with representatives of the category, which currently has around 31 permit holders and 20 assistants registered with the department. More than 80 legal provisions are being analyzed.

– Listening to the category is extremely important when reviewing the rules defined for it. Our goal is to always keep the channel open with all classes of municipal transport workers, in order to promote the necessary improvements for them and for service users, especially at a time when the city is facing a pandemic with serious consequences for the sector – highlighted Undersecretary Allan Borges.

During the new coronavirus pandemic, important measures were announced by the SMTR for the class, such as: the suspension of inspections while the state of emergency continues in the city; the increase in the deadline from 180 to 540 days for assistants to start the process of obtaining autonomy, and from 360 to 720 days the deadline to present the vehicle; the increase in the useful life of conventional taxis from 8 to 10 years and of executive taxis from 7 to 9 years. This last measure will benefit more than a thousand taxi drivers who would already have to change their vehicles this year due to their expired useful life.

– Our quest to improve the services provided by taxi drivers will be constant. This class needs good conditions to perform its activity, which is so important for the city, and the population deserves to be transported with quality in the yellow taxis, which have been awarded the title of cultural heritage of Rio – concluded Paulo Jobim, municipal secretary of Transportation.
