- City Hall will install sensors in the air conditioning of buses to ensure a more pleasant environment
City Hall announces installation of the first stage of sensors in bus air conditioning - Beth Santos/ Rio City Hall Rio de Janeiro City Hall presented, this Tuesday (17/12), at its administrative headquarters, the first stage of the installation of air-conditioning sensors in the city's buses (SPPO). The action aims to guarantee the well-being of passengers and punish companies that do not comply with air-conditioning rules. The sensors have already been installed on some city lines and on Conexão BRT buses.
The reference temperature inside the vehicle will be 24ºC (twenty-four degrees Celsius). However, the Municipal Department of Transportation (SMTR) will consider air conditioning to be on and in good working order if it reduces the temperature inside the vehicle by at least 8ºC (eight degrees Celsius), compared to the temperature outside the vehicle. These criteria take into account the standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).
– By the end of the year, we will have around 150 buses equipped with the sensor. We have a bidding process on the 27th and, throughout the summer, we will install the sensor in the other buses in the network. It is a simple installation and the City Hall itself is doing this. With the equipment, we can see each bus individually and see if they are delivering the determined temperature. The bus company that is delivering the temperature it promised will receive the normal subsidy. If we identify that it is not delivering the service, the company will stop receiving the subsidy – said Mayor Eduardo Paes.
With the sensor, the Department of Transportation will be able to remotely measure the temperature of the entire municipal fleet. The control program will allow, for example, the average temperature of a given line to be checked in real time.
The external temperature to be used as a basis for measurement will be the maximum temperature measured in the city on the day the trip takes place, according to the record of the National Institute of Meteorology . Rio City Hall will receive the data in real time, and the temperature will be displayed on the Jaé validators installed on the buses.
The implementation of the new equipment has already begun and, currently, 64 buses already have the sensor. By the end of the year, the expectation is to reach 150. All sensors have already been purchased by the municipality and, on the 27th, a new bidding process will be held to choose the company that will implement the remaining equipment in the entire fleet by March 2025.
